Job Description:
Under the direct supervision of a Research Scientist and in a team environment, provides technical support to forest or other terrestrial ecosystem research programs as a member of a field crew and at times leading a field crew in the implementation of field surveys and data collection.
Job Responsibilities:
- manage equipment inventory and service field equipment
- conduct field data collection programs and at times lead a field crew to ensure that work is conducted to provincial standards
- provide leadership to students and unclassified staff on behalf of the supervisor
- operate specialized sampling equipment and ATVs when in the field
- maintain data quality standards and the timely completion of surveys
Job Requirements:
- oral and written communication skills to collaborate with partner agencies and landowners, present findings, as well as to prepare preliminary data analysis and data summaries
- knowledge and ability in operating ATVs to access remote sampling sites
- You have the ability to undertake physically demanding fieldwork in remote locations, in all types of weather conditions.
- working knowledge of field equipment operations to perform field maintenance, adjustments and repair equipment (e.g. tree height measuring devices, increment borers, diameter tapes, peat and soil corers)
- proficient with personal computers/applications /field tablets to enter data, prepare preliminary data analysis and data summaries
- knowledge and skills in orientation, including the use of maps, compass and GPS to navigate in remote forest areas and wetlands to locate plots and conduct fieldwork
- planning and coordinating skills to assist with organizing schedules and equipment (e.g. accommodations, vehicle transportation) for field projects
- You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.
