Job Description:

To provide biological advice and guidance to the district team on the ecology and management of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. To participate in the development of resource management plans to maintain the sustainability of ecosystems. To develop and assist in the coordination of various integrated resource management activities in the district. To assist in the identification & resolution of resource issues.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Providing group leadership, coordinating, directing, training and evaluating staff as required with responsibility for their work performance, conduct, and safety practices. Assisting in other ministry program areas as required.
  • Maintaining and applying current knowledge of the pure and applied scientific advancements in the sciences which collectively comprise the field of aquatic and terrestrial ecology; promoting the implementation and use of new technology, analyses, programs and policies to ensure their application in resource decision-making.
  • Designing and performing scientifically sound and comprehensive studies and surveys (e.g. lakes and rivers, wetlands, wildlife habitat, stick nests, aerial wildlife surveys), analyzing and interpreting data; and preparing reports and recommendations (e.g. fisheries assessments).

  • Planning, developing and implementing strategies to ensure the sustainability of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including aquatic and terrestrial populations and habitats for a district, by supporting forest, fisheries & wildlife management planning and assisting in the preparation & review of land use strategies.
  • Participating in district work program planning to ensure conformity with resource management plans, including developing budget proposals based on fisheries & wildlife management plans and managing project budgets. Reviewing forest management plan annual work schedules to ensure concerns are properly commented.
  • Providing biological advice on the ecology and management of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to the district team, clients and the general public, including preparing draft Minister’s briefing notes and correspondence.
  • Participating on committees at the district, regional and provincial levels to discuss and promote current resource management techniques and to resolve common resource issues.
  • Participating in district work program planning to ensure conformity with resource management plans, including developing budget proposals based on fisheries & wildlife management plans and managing project budgets. Reviewing forest management plan annual work schedules to ensure concerns are properly commented.

Job Requirements:

  • You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.
  • You have the ability to work in the field under all types of weather conditions.
  • You have the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation (e.g. Fish & Wildlife Conservation Act, Endangered Species Act, 2007), regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • You have proven ability to gather, analyze and interpret resource management data in order to provide expertise and advice on ecological impacts of activities and management of resource issues.
  • You have proven project management and organizational skills to design, plan and lead scientific studies/survey projects, including preparing and managing project budgets.
  • You are proficient with computers, internet, email and software applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, statistical, spatial, population and habitat modelling, databases, and geographic information systems.
  • You have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to explain technical information in plain language to clients, liaise with specialists and compose scientific and technical reports.
